En nombre de la Asociación de Melilla para la UNESCO y del Observatorio de Ceuta y Melilla han sido remitidas sendas felicitaciones por la Festividad de San Patricio a la Embajada de Irlanda, a la Red Empresarial Hispano-Irlandesa – SIBN- , y a Carlos Burgos , Presidente de la Asociación Hispano-Irlandesa con sede en Valladolid.
A la Universidad de esta ciudad acudí invitado por esta entidad el pasado mes de Septiembre del 2024; con motivo del “Primer Encuentro de Asociaciones Hispano-Irlandesas” presentando como ponencia “El Callejero Irlandés de Melilla”. En dicho evento tuve ocasión de saludar a Frank Smith –Embajador de Irlanda en España-, haciéndole entrega de una reproducción en piedra del monolito del Mariscal Sherlock, erigido en Melilla La Vieja.
Entre otros muchos asistentes en dicho encuentro destacar la amabilidad y simpatías de María F. Reid – Presidenta de SIBN “Spanish Irish Business Network”.
Felicitación a la Embajada de Irlanda
Esta entidad fue fundada por un grupo de entusiastas profesionales irlandeses con el patrocinio de la Embajada de Irlanda en España, con el objetivo de unir lazos comerciales y culturales entre Irlanda y España.
Recientemente ha realizado una exitosa Gala Benéfica , el pasado 7 de marzo en el Hotel Palace de Madrid consiguiendo recaudar 50.000 euros para “The Grann Centre” y “Madreperla”.
El día de San Patricio ya se ha convertido en Madrid en la “Semana de San Patricio” según programa difundido donde se incluyen Danza, Música, Deporte, Cine y un espectacular desfile de San Patricio el Domingo 15 de Marzo.
En la Ciudad Autónoma de Melilla existe una pequeña comunidad irlandesa con la que animosamente celebramos este día tan especial para todos los irlandeses del mundo. De hecho esta festividad está incluida cada 17 de marzo en el Calendario Intercultural de Melilla que elabora anualmente la Asociación Mem-Guimel con el Patrocinio de la Consejería de Cultura.
En la misiva de felicitación enviada se informa que el próximo 19 de marzo de 2025 celebramos el 250º Aniversario del Levantamiento del Sitio de Melilla (1775-2025), cuando la ciudad fue asediada durante 100 días por las tropas del Sultán Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah.
En la brillante defensa militar tuvo una destacada participación un Mariscal de origen Irlandés enviado a Melilla por el propio Rey Carlos III. Su nombre es John Sherlock, con el que todos los melillenses compartimos con orgullo esta vinculación histórica hispano-irlandesa.
Tanto la Fundación Melilla Ciudad Monumental como la Consejería de Cultura han elaborado un programa de eventos a desarrollar durante este mes de marzo. Por su parte UNESCO-Melilla ha programado para el próximo sábado 29 de marzo una “Ruta Sherlock” por el Callejero Irlandés de Melilla en Inglés y Español con intervenciones musicales.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE EMBASSY OF IRELAND ON ST. PATRICK’S DAY
On behalf of the Melilla Association for UNESCO and the Ceuta and Melilla Observatory, congratulatory messages have been sent on the occasion of St. Patrick’s Day to the Embassy of Ireland, the Spanish-Irish Business Network (SIBN), and Carlos Burgos, President of the Spanish-Irish Association based in Valladolid. I had the honor of visiting the University of Valladolid last September, invited by this association, to participate in the First Meeting of Spanish-Irish Associations, where I presented a lecture titled The Irish Street Names of Melilla. During this event, I had the opportunity to meet Frank Smith, Ambassador of Ireland to Spain, and to present him with a stone reproduction of the Marshal Sherlock monument, erected in Melilla La Vieja. Among the many distinguished attendees, I would particularly like to highlight the kindness and enthusiasm of María F. Reid, President of SIBN (Spanish-Irish Business Network). This organization was founded by a group of passionate Irish professionals with the support of the Irish Embassy in Spain, aiming to foster commercial and cultural ties between Ireland and Spain. Recently, SIBN held a highly successful charity gala on March 7 at the Hotel Palace in Madrid, raising an impressive €50,000 for The Grann Centre and Madreperla. St. Patrick’s Day has now evolved into a full St. Patrick’s Week in Madrid, as reflected in the official program featuring dance, music, sports, cinema, and a spectacular St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday, March 15. In the Autonomous City of Melilla, a small yet vibrant Irish community enthusiastically joins in celebrating this significant day for the Irish people worldwide. Indeed, this festivity is officially recognized each March 17 in the Intercultural Calendar of Melilla, an initiative developed annually by the Mem-Guimel Association with the sponsorship of the Department of Culture. In our congratulatory message, we also share that on March 19, 2025, Melilla will commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Lifting of the Siege of Melilla (1775–2025). This historic event saw the city besieged for 100 days by the forces of Sultan Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah. A key figure in the brilliant military defense was a Marshal of Irish descent, personally sent to Melilla by King Charles III—John Sherlock, a name that all Melilla residents proudly associate with our shared Spanish-Irish historical heritage. Both the Melilla Ciudad Monumental Foundation and the Department of Culture have organized a series of events throughout March to honor this anniversary. Additionally, UNESCO-Melilla has planned a special “Sherlock Route” for Saturday, March 29, guiding participants through Melilla’s Irish street names, with bilingual explanations in English and Spanish, accompanied by musical performances.
